Counseling Biblically - The Church

Consider this- you are a person reading this Bible Study.  You are impressed with the facts from Scripture that everyone is a Biblical Counselor, that you reading this are called to be a Biblical counselor.  It can be a little overwhelming can’t it.  After all what do you do to prepare to be a person who can gently restore another person?   You can be trained at a college or seminary, but that takes funds and time.  So what can you do to fulfill the commands of Paul in Galatians?

      I.   IT STARTS HERE

Colossians 3:23-24 Doing all as for the Lord, not men!

II.      STRONGLY PREACH THE GOOD NEWS

1 Corinthians 1:17 Christ sent Paul to preach the Gospel

III. KEEP ON PREACHING THE GOSPEL- THE POWER AND WISDOM OF GOD

1 Corinthians 2:4-7 God’s power and wisdom are what we need to hear and hear now

IV. LEARNING TO COUNSEL OTHERS BIBLICALLY-THE CHURCH AT WORK

A.      The Church makes disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)

B.      The Church equips the saints for works of service (Ephesians 4:11-16)

C.      The Church uses God’s Word and relies on His Spirit’s work in hearts so we can faithfully preach and teach the truth in love (1Corinthians 2:6-10)

D.      The Church’s goal in this process: restoration for use (Galatians 6:1-10)

E.      The Church uses God’s Word in a variety of forms to encourage and confront in love

F.      Practical conclusions from this study:

a.       Being Jesus disciple is not simple or easy (Luke 14:25-35)

b.       Meeting with my brothers and sisters is the priority of my life (Hebrews 10:25)

c.       Get to know God through His Word. How?  Listen to preaching and teaching from God’s messengers as well as personal Bible study and prayer (1Thessalonians 2:13)

d.       See yourself as part of the of the Body of Christ, a humble servant, ready to encourage and build up your bothers and sisters in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7)

V.                 FINAL THOUGHTS

Jesus Christ is Lord of the Church, the shepherd of His flock.  Be sure that you do what you as unto Him- especially in the area of counseling, admonishing others!

If God’s Word is sufficient for the living of our lives, for understanding our responsibilities and role in His Church, then we had better be studying it and knowing God’s word well better than anything else we know!

“Therefore, to one who knows the thing to do, and does not do it, to Him it is sin.” What are we doing about what we know to be true?

Be encouraged by the fact that God gives us peace and understanding in all circumstances but we have to listen to Him
